Decatur Looks to Expand Regional Park
by Terry Sylvester

Decatur Township is trying to meet a July 15 deadline to purchase a 101 acre tract for the expansion of Southwestway Park. A steering committee chaired by Sue Collins met Tuesday June 4 to review their efforts to raise about $400,000 needed to seal the $l million purchase price for the property.

In cooperation with the Indianapolis Parks Foundation, Decatur residents will seek out potential individual and business contributors during the coming days and weeks. Personal contacts, and a series of newspaper advertisements will lead the fundraising efforts.

Park expansion, if successful will create a 300 acre regional park to serve not only Decatur Township, but surrounding areas of Marion, Johnson and Morgan Counties. An expanded Southwestway Park would be second in size only to Eagle Creek Park.

Ms. Collins may be reached at 856-4253. Decatur MCANA Director Terry Sylvester may be reached at 856-3104. Donations may be made to the Indianapolis Parks Foundation. Donations should be marked "Mann Property" or "Southwestway Park Land Fund".
