Billboards -- The Next Step On November 18, the Metropolitan Development Committee of the City County Council voted to recommend approval of amendments to the Sign Ordinance of Marion County. While many viewed this as a defeat for those of us who want to see all new billboard construction banned, it is time to take the "broken eggs" and turn them into an omelet. MCANA will be working in the coming months to gather statistical and policy information about the true impacts that bans on new billboard construction have had on the communities that had the foresight and fortitude to take this bold step to preserve and enhance quality of life for their residents and promote positive economic development in their communities. The extraordinary attention which was drawn to this topic during the sign revision process shows us how passionately Marion County’s neighborhoods feel about the billboard issue. We need to keep that level of involvement as we move forward in achieving our goals. Sometimes, gathering information can be tedious and painstaking, and people’s interest can sometimes fade when the heat of media attention and public debate wanes. We invite you to continue to prove that our tenacity will win out in the end. If you would like to help MCANA in it’s efforts to see new billboard construction in Marion County brought to a halt, please contact us and find out how you can help. send comments
