The Outlook for 2003 Directors and Officers of McANA were asked to complete the following assignment: Describe in 25 words or less, the most important issue facing Indianapolis in 2003. Nearly all expressed difficulty in choosing just one issue and limiting their comments. The order of their remarks have been randomized. Margaret Schattner (Director, Perry Township) – The United Airlines filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 9th will have a very serious effect on the future budgets of Indianapolis, Marion County. Norm Pace (Director, Warren Township) -- Implementation of the Community Values Component of the Comprehensive Plan, which addresses the needs for Indianapolis and effects the "Quality of Life" for all citizens. Cathy Burton (President) -- A critical problem facing Marion County is the high rate of mortgage foreclosure and other circumstances that defeat home ownership and create transient living situations. Terry Sylvester (Director, Decatur Township) -- Code Enforcement. The process from complaint through court action takes too long. Fines need to be larger. Inspectors need to "go look for things". Kim Boyd (Director, Pike Township) – Election campaigns in 2003 should avoid personal attacks and accusations; focus on the issues and needs of the community as true leaders of the people. Dave Danz (Director, Wayne Township) -- The most serious issue facing Indianapolis is setting our priorities appropriately. How can we seriously consider a new sports stadium, while our sewers are crumbling? Nancy Meade (Director, Lawrence Township) -- Completing and implementing the new Comp Plan and accompanying signage ordinances would be top priority. Snow plowing is always a priority for a Mayor. Pat Andrews (Vice-President) – Attention must be paid to the cumulative effect and regressive nature of taxes considered this year; Indianapolis could forfeit its distinction as an ‘affordable’ city. Zeola Adair (Director, Center Township) – Joblessness is a crisis. Mere existence is what a lot of families are doing now. Basic necessities are going unmet. This increases homelessness as well. Merri Anderson (Director, Wayne Township) – Clean water, clean air and quality education are necessary to attract and keep businesses. These quality of life issues have real economic consequences for Indianapolis. send comments
