'Organized Citizens on Mining' is Up and Running A new neighborhood association has been started to deal with the effects of limestone mining within Marion County. Neighborhoods all over Indianapolis have these operations right in their back yards. From the small mom and pop operations to the huge multi-nationals—they all run their businesses with little or no regulation from City Hall. Along with McANA, the ‘Organized Citizens on Mining’ (OCOM) will evaluate the current air and water quality standards and the applicable zoning regulations for their effectiveness. The group will develop a list of concerns that should be addressed by the industry or that should be regulated by the City. These might include— require a permit process that includes reclamation plans, a limit on the hours of operation of heavy equipment, or a limit on the level of blasting as it approaches a residential area. If your neighborhood is exposed to unwanted effects from limestone mining operations nearby, you should be joining OCOM. Together the neighborhoods of Marion County can get problems solved. For more information, call your McANA director, or email OCOM at: indymining@yahoo.com. send comments
