Public Hearing on IndyGo Fare Changes
by Joanne Hamilton
[member of Southern Wayne Neighborhood Organization and an IndyGo Rider]

It was announced at the last TAC meeting that IndyGo is planning to change the fare structure effective in August.  The (required) public hearing will be held June 12 at 5:30-7pm in room 118 at the City-County Building.

The change will be elimination of free transfers and lowering the cost of the DayPass to $2. 50.  There has been considerable abuse of the free transfers, and rules governing their use have been misunderstood by much of the public.  This causes confrontation problems with the drivers who have had the responsibility of confronting misusers and enforcing the rules while trying to keep to their schedule with a busload of passengers.

The proposed changes will eliminate that problem and hopefully generate a slight increase in fare box revenue without creating a burden for the majority of riders or potential riders.  Gil Holmes compared it to the Biblical decision Solomon made to "divide the baby" that his subjects were fighting over.  It would lower the cost of the DayPass for current users and encourage others to use it for more trips by bus, thereby increasing ridership figures (vital to obtaining Fed funding).  The only people hurt by this would be riders who only ride one way to work and get a ride home.  They will pay $2. 00 instead of $1. 00 and the free transfer.  Riders who need to double transfer would be making the choice to pay $3. 00 for the 3 rides or buy the DayPass for $2. 50, so if they lose money it is their own choice.

TAC members asked for stats showing that this is not a hardship for average riders, so hopefully they will be presented at the hearing.
