Public Memory, Public Records: Empowering Citizen Access
by Clarke Kahlo

When public health activist Erin Brockovich defeated a corporate polluter, her access to public records played a key role. Such records serve as a "civic memory" of information that can greatly impact the democratic process. Join a practical workshop with activists who demonstrate the value of Indiana's freedom of information laws, and offer ways to overcome barriers to access for more effective community activism and policy-making.

McANA Votes on Billboard Issue
by Cathy Burton

At its October Board meeting, the Marion County Alliance of Neighborhood Associations voted unanimously to actively seek a ban on construction of new billboards in Marion County, and began considering an action plan to achieve that goal. After a lengthy and detailed review and discussion of the proposed revisions to the sign regulations of Marion County, the MCANA board voted to support the revisions as an interim measure to slow the construction of new billboards while MCANA spends the next year (approx.) assembling data proving the economic, social, and aesthetic soundness of a banning new billboards and building public awareness and involvement in seeking a ban.

(President’s note: please watch future issues of Common Ground and MCANA’s website for how to help with this very important issue.)
