Here's a great resource opportunity for your neighborhood!

Community Service Work (CSW) is a sentencing option that is utilized frequently by the Courts in Marion County. Each year, almost 1/3 of the cases placed on probation are required to complete CSW as a condition. The Department is fortunate to offer a variety of opportunities including work with local, non-profit organizations as well as work crews.

Work crews operate 6 days of the week and focus on neighborhood initiatives and public projects such as alley clean-ups, graffiti removal, and beautification projects. Work crews have been especially helpful during times of crisis, having assisted with efforts after the tornadoes in 2002 and flooding in 2003. Projects are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizations interested in utilizing the assistance of the CSW program should attend an informational meeting at 7pm on Tuesday, March 30th in the Public Assembly Room (2nd floor) of the City-County Building.

If you have any further questions regarding CSW projects, please contact Georgette Sims at 327-8259 or Gsims@indygov.org.

Permits Group to Take Wednesday Mornings for Training
[modified from a press release by Justin Ohlemiller]

The City of Indianapolis, Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) will alter public hours on Wednesdays in the permit services lobby to improve code enforcement and customer service. Effective May 5, the new Wednesday hours for the lobby will be from noon to 5 p.m. Currently the office, located at 604 N. Sherman Drive, is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

While the lobby will be closed to the public on Wednesday mornings, the permit services office will remain open, and that time will be utilized for additional staff training and permit processing.

"This new schedule will allow DMD to dedicate more time to comprehensive staff training across the entire Division of Compliance," said DMD Director Maury Plambeck. "Increased training and coordination among our staff will translate into improved code compliance and customer service."

Plambeck explained that a key to improving code enforcement is ensuring that permits are issued in strict adherence to the code. When permit errors occur, they oftentimes are not discovered until construction begins. Last year, the error rate was approximately 4.7 percent.

The new schedule is the latest effort by the city to improve the permit process. In 2002, the city announced the addition of online permit services that allow contractors to file for permits over the Internet, saving both time and money.

Earth Day - April 24
by Merri Anderson
[McANA Director for Wayne, Chair of NATE, POC]

As usual, McANA will have a booth at the Earth Day Festival so that we can reach out to all the residents of Marion County Neighborhoods about Quality of Life issues that affect us all in our communities.

We will need volunteers to staff the booth which is usually a very enjoyable few hours (no more than 3) and you can meet your friends and family before/after your shift and enjoy the day among all the other folks (15,000 on average) who attend.

Many environmental issues are important to and tackled by McANA's Neighborhoods and the Environment (NATE) and our Parks Oversight committees every month, at 4:30 and 5:15 respectively, on the 4th Monday of the month at INRC 1802 North Illinois St. We are working on the Septic ordinance, Parks Comp Plan (hurry, it's almost done!) and air quality issues among others as needed.

Back to Earth Day Festival-- Bring the kids/grandkids, the dog (on a leash! with your scooper) and take in the scores of freebies, information opportunities, entertainment on the free stage with top name performers, have a bite at our friendly vendor tent, pick up some organic veggies, and walk the contemplative maze. There's something for everyone at this first festival of the year where we can all 'make every day Earth Day' and it's all FREE!

Contact me to sign up to volunteer a shift ASAP (or help set up by 11 AM) by reply to: anderson@mcanaindy.org   Okay, other volunteer opportunities are also available with many other organizations as well as for Earth Day itself. www.earthdayindiana.org

Thanks!
